Putting Old Data into New System: Web-Based Catalog Card Image Searching

چکیده
This paper proposes a new approach t o solve the data inputting bottleneck problem f o r library catalog data, or metadata. T h e data have been provided with paper cards arranged in wooden boxes. A lot of efforts have been taken to digitize t h e m in order to put these data to be machine-readable. However, despite such effor t s , only a small amount of data has been digitized so f a r because the inputting i s done manually. W e solve this problem by using the catalog card images digitized by high-speed scanners. This approach has advantages such as: (1) W e can deal with the electronic catalog data with remarkably reduced t ime and cost. (2) It enables the seamless integration of the image-based and keyword-based searches. (3) I t boosts u p the process of inputting of the catalog data itself.

متن کاملCard-image public access catalogues (CIPACs): an international survey
This paper surveys card-image public access catalogues (CIPACs) – online library catalogues based on databases of digitized catalogue cards and more or less sophisticated mechanisms for browsing or searching. Solutions of this kind have been implemented by a number of libraries in various countries since the mid-1990s, mainly as inexpensive alternatives to a full retrospective conversion of the...
متن کاملAmount of invested mental effort (AIME) in online searching
This research investigates how people’s perceptions of information retrieval (IR) systems, their perceptions of search tasks, and their perceptions of self-efficacy influence the amount of invested mental effort (AIME) they put into using two different IR systems: a Web search engine and a library system. It also explores the impact of mental effort on an end user’s search experience. To assess...
متن کاملLog Based Analysis of How Faceted and Text Based Search Interact in a Library Catalog Interface
Faceted based search is an increasingly common part of search interfaces. This study examines the use of a library catalog search interface which supports but text searching and faceted based searching. Log analysis is performed of library catalog search records to analyze how and when faceted based searching is used in conjunction with text based searching. The logs are from the Triangle Resea...

The number of World-Wide Web (WWW) documents available to users of the Internet is growing at an incredible rate. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important to develop systems that aid users in searching, ltering, and retrieving information from the Internet. Currently, only a few prototype systems catalog and index images in Web documents. To greatly improve the cataloging and indexing o...
